Janet Heukeshoven

Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, Associate Professor of Music at Saint Mary’s University, currently serves as Director of Bands and Music Education Program Coordinator.  She directs the SMU Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, coaches chamber ensembles, teaches education methods coursework and applied flute lessons.  She also performs on flute and piccolo with the La Salle Woodwind Quintet, the Winona Municipal Band, faculty recitals and other regional performances.

Heukeshoven completed her B.S. in Music Education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She began her public school music-teaching career in LaPorte, Minnesota.  Heukeshoven completed her M.M. in Flute Performanceat The Boston Conservatory, studying flute with Philip Kaplan and Leone Buyse, and orchestral conducting with Atillio Poto.  In 1984 Heukeshoven accepted a position at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN.  She directed the Wind Ensemble, the CST Orchestra, taught applied flute and music education coursework.  In 1994 Heukeshoven completed her D.M.A. in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying with James Smith and David Becker.  As a graduate assistant/fellowship position at UW-Madison Heukeshoven conducted the University Band, and was the recipient of the Richard Church Memorial Scholarship awarded annually to the outstanding graduate student conductor.

Upon completion of her dissertation in 1994 on the Harmoniemusik of Wenzel Sedlak, Heukeshoven joined the faculty of Saint Mary’s University, Winona, Minnesota. (http://www.smumn.edu/music) Heukeshoven holds memberships in Minnesota Band Director’s Association, College Band Director’s National Association, MMEA (Minnesota Music Educator’s Association), Upper Midwest Flute Association, Minnesota Band Director’s Association (MBDA) and Sigma Alpha Iota.  She currently serves on the board of directors for MMEA and MBDA as collegiate representative. Heukeshoven and the SMU Concert Band have now commissioned four new works as part of an ongoing international commissioning project: two for symphonic band, one for wind ensemble and choir, and another for winds and piano, These are made possible with the financial support of the Kaplan Foundation. The most recent premiere was in March of 2007, Judith Zaimont’s Israeli Rhapsody.  The next work (as yet unnamed) is being composed by Marc Bernstein and is scored for jazz combo and concert band. 

Heukeshoven is an active adjudicator, guest conductor, flute/piccolo soloist and clinician throughout the region Heukeshoven recently guest conducted the Tri-Metro High School Honor Band (Minneapolis), and Intercollegiate Honor Bands in Virginia (2008 CBDNA New Band Music Symposium), and in Minnesota at the MMEA State Music Education Mid-Winter Clinic in February 2008. .  She will be performing throughout Europe as piccolo soloist with the Minnesota Ambassadors of Music July of 2008.  Heukeshoven’s complete performance edition of Sedlak’s Barbiere von Sevilla is scheduled to be published by Floricor Editions later this year.  (http://www.floricor-editions.com) The complete harmoniemusik transcription is made up of twenty-four movements, and will be published in two volumes.
